The Department of Sport Management has partnered with the College of Journalism and Communications to offer the Social Media graduate certificate to our online M.S. in Sport Management students. The tuition cost will remain the same at $550 per credit, plus $35.75 for fees-per-credit.

The Social Media graduate certificate is a tremendous opportunity for working professionals to learn skills and gain insights to assist in their careers. The professional certificate includes four courses that can be completed in two semesters or at your own pace.

All students enrolled in the certificate program will gain an introduction to various social media platforms as well as new areas in mass communication technologies and techniques.


Courses are designed to teach students how to:

Social Media Courses

To earn the graduate certificate, students must take four courses for a total of 12 credits. All four courses are offered every fall, spring, and summer C term.

Students will be required to apply for the graduate certificate prior to enrolling in the courses. Graduate certificate applications will also require a statement of purpose and updated resume.

Required Courses (12 credits)

Focuses on social media best practices, including content, frequency, visuals, and platform mechanics. Students explore how social media impacts public relations, marketing, customer service, and broader business communications. The course also examines major platforms, their evolution, and the current and future role of social media in business.
Introduces students to digital storytelling, including idea development, production, and analysis. Emphasizes how storytelling differs in digital vs. traditional media, while incorporating advertising, journalism, and public relations perspectives. Students learn to create impactful online content through a focus on creativity, production, and distribution, tailored to modern audience behavior.
Students develop a strategic social media branding plan and analyze how social platforms influence brand perception. The course covers creating brand strategies, auditing competitors, evaluating engagement effectiveness, and using key social media tools. Through case studies and applied work, students learn to maintain brand consistency while maximizing digital engagement.
Focuses on executing and managing social media strategies aligned with organizational goals. Students learn to define KPIs, plan and create content, manage paid social campaigns, measure performance, and handle crisis communication. Emphasizes the integration of strategy, execution, and analytics to support marketing objectives.
